Dog Training in Kansas City – Frequently Asked Questions

What types of dogs do you work with?

We work with dogs of all breeds, sizes, and ages. Whether you have a new puppy, an adolescent dog, or an adult dog with established behavior challenges, we tailor training to your dog’s individual needs and temperament.

What behavior issues can you help with?

We commonly help Kansas City dog owners with:

  • Basic obedience (sit, stay, recall, leash manners)
  • Puppy foundations and socialization
  • Leash pulling and jumping
  • Reactivity and aggression toward dogs or people
  • Barking, anxiety, and impulse control
  • Confidence-building and focus in distracting environments
Is my dog too old or too young to start training?

No. Dogs can learn at any age. Puppies benefit from early structure, and adult dogs are absolutely capable of learning new behaviors. Training plans are adjusted based on age, learning style, and experience. Puppies should start training at 8 weeks of age.

Do you customize training or follow a set program?

All training is customized. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all programs. Your dog’s training plan is built around:

  • Your dog’s behavior and personality
  • Your household and lifestyle
  • Your goals as an owner
What training methods do you use?

We use Cynopraxic training that focuses on building understanding and strengthening the human-canine bond. Training becomes something we do with the dog, not to the dog, creating results that are safer, more reliable, and easier to maintain in everyday life.

We’re always happy to explain our methods and answer questions before training begins.

Will my dog only listen if treats or tools are present?

No. While rewards may be used during the learning phase, our goal is reliable behavior that works in real-life situations — not dependence on treats, tools, or constant prompting.

Where does training take place?

Training will take place in your home to start, eventually we will go in public environments, or in other real-world settings depending on your dog’s needs. This helps ensure skills transfer to the places where behavior matters most.

How long does training take?

There’s no universal timeline. Results depend on your dog, the issues being addressed, and owner consistency. During your consultation, we’ll provide a realistic training recommendation based on your situation and goals.

How much time will I need to practice with my dog?

Training is most effective when owners practice consistently. We keep expectations realistic and will guide you on how to practice efficiently within your daily routine.

Can family members be involved in training?

Yes. When appropriate, we encourage involvement from all household members, so everyone communicates with the dog consistently. This often leads to faster and more reliable results.

Do you offer group classes, private sessions, or board-and-train?

Fountain City Dog Training offers private sessions, play groups and board and trains. We’ll help you determine which format makes the most sense based on your dog’s behavior, your goals, and your schedule.

Are there extra fees for behavior modification or reactivity?

No, we do not charge extra fees for severe behavior issues. We charge one flat fee and that covers ALL the dogs in the home and ALL the behaviors issues, including aggression and anxiety.

Do you offer support after training is complete?

Yes. Our professional dog trainers provide guidance beyond sessions and offer follow-up or refresher options to help you maintain progress long-term.

How do I know if you’re the right trainer for me and my dog?

That’s what the consultation is for. We believe in honesty and fit. If we’re not the best match for your dog’s needs, we’ll tell you and help point you in the right direction.

How do I get started?

The first step is scheduling a no obligation consultation ($100 fee) with one of our professional dog trainers. We’ll discuss your dog, your goals, and the best path forward — no pressure, just clarity. Contact us to get started!
